Suggestions To Overcome poor Welfarism of Community Health Practitioners
Sequel to our previous article on the poor Welfarism of Community Health Practitioners in Nigeria and our promise to come up with achievable suggestions to better the plight of these professionals, we believe that among better approach and with urgency, the underlisted items are invaluable for better welfare of Community Health Practitioners.
1. The Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN) must begin to take welfare issues seriously. It is not enough to regulate licensing and examinations while ignoring the financial realities of practitioners. If the Board can insist on mandatory continuous professional development, it must equally push for mandatory minimum wage compliance for Community Health Practitioners across government and private facilities.
2. The Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria (ACHPN) must rise above ceremonial conferences. Welfare and financial advocacy should take centre stage. If PENGASSAN can fight for oil workers, why can’t ACHPN fight for fair wages for Community Health Practitioners? The association must stop acting like a social club and start functioning as a union with teeth.
3. Employment standards must change. Not every private clinic or NGO should be allowed to employ Community Health Practitioners if they cannot meet minimum pay standards. A clinic that cannot pay decent wages has no business employing licensed practitioners.
4. Government must restructure primary healthcare financing. You cannot expect Community Health Practitioners to drive Universal Health Coverage when they themselves live below subsistence levels. Salary harmonisation across states and LGAs is overdue.
5. Recognition matters. A profession that remains underpaid will keep losing its best brains. If Community Health Practitioners remain financially frustrated, the vision of sustainable primary healthcare in Nigeria will collapse.
The truth is simple; you cannot build a strong healthcare system on the back of a hungry workforce. No one is asking for riches, just humane treatment. If we fail to act, the very foundation of community health in Nigeria will erode, and future generations will pay the price.
We are losing the nobility of the profession.
