Environmental Health

The College of Health Sciences and Technology Idah, Kogi State, offers National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programs in Environmental Health. These programs equip students with the knowledge and skills to identify, assess, and mitigate environmental factors that impact human health.

It is one of the pioneer department that affirmed the establishment of the college as a professional training institution. This department has been responsible for producing some of the most prolific, outspoken, intelligent and result -oriented graduates from the college. Sometimes, I do wonder if it is a coincidence or an incident that coincided for this department to be responsible for the Apex leadership of the college for more than two decades. Not withstanding, there has been successive developments in their respective administration.

During the interdepartmental presentation held in the college auditorium in 2023..... The departmental representatives were proficient enough to practicalize their work in the course of presenting. And they were the champions of the Day.

As a probational student, I witnessed a seminar presentation by students of this noble profession, and I, like many others was awed by the confidence, the synergy and composure displayed by the students, even though I concede a few presentations were not up to par, but the the overall program was awesomely inspiring........ It made us fell in love with the profession, even though we were students of a different department.

I had a lodge mate who was in this department, were it not for his uniform, he could be easily mistaken for med lab when he verbalize on microbiology....... I've heard him speak about the life cycle and economic importance of Ascaris Lumbricoids, Trichuris Trichuria, Necator Americanus etc...... and couldn't help but admire his knowledge. He was well trained by his tutors.

The training programs in Environmental Health cover various aspects, including:

1. Environmental Monitoring: Assessing and monitoring environmental factors like air, water, and soil quality.

2. Waste Management: Managing waste disposal, recycling, and minimization.

3. Food Safety: Ensuring safe food handling, preparation, and storage.

4. Vector Control: Controlling vectors like mosquitoes, flies, and rodents that transmit diseases.

5. Housing and Sanitation: Ensuring safe housing and sanitation conditions.

They can work in various settings, including:

1. Government Agencies: Ministries of Health, Environment, and Local Governments.

2. Private Sector: Consulting firms, industries, and waste management companies.

3. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Environmental and health-focused NGOs.

4. Research Institutions: Conducting studies on environmental health issues.

The Environmental Health professionals play a crucial role in:

1. Disease Prevention: Preventing diseases related to environmental factors.

2. Health Promotion: Promoting healthy behaviors and environments.

3. Environmental Protection: Protecting the environment and public health.

4. Policy Development: Informing environmental health policies and regulations.

Graduates can pursue further education and career advancement opportunities, including:

1. Bachelor's Degree: Pursuing a degree in Environmental Health or related fields.

2. Master's Degree: Specializing in areas like Environmental Health, Public Health, or Environmental Health Science

It is arguably the department to give first certificate/diploma (ND/HND) to not less than forty percent of PhD holders in the college today...... The first PhD holder in the college is an environmentalist, the most recent PhD holder is also an environmentalist. This department deserves all the accolades.

To put into perspective, The environmentalists are constantly advocating for the protection of the environment and biosphere from misuse from human activity through such measures as ecosystem protection, waste reduction and pollution prevention.

How do you say these people are not crucial to your lives as individuals, families, or communities?
