Ruling on an elderly person who is unable to fast
ASSALAMU ALAYKUM WARAHMATULLAHI WABARAKATUH Praise be to ALlāh. If he or she cannot fast because he or she is sick, but there is the hope that he or she will recover and become able to fast later on, then he or she has to make up the days that she did not fast in Ramadan, because ALlāh says (interpretation of the meaning): “and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days” [Al-Baqarah 2:185] But if he or she cannot fast and there is no hope that he or she will be able to do so in the future because of sickness or old age, then she does not have to fast, but he or she has to feed one poor person for each day.
